John’s notes; This short solo started out as a rhythm guitar ‘Barre’ chords lesson but as I improvised over the chord progression the solo took on a life of it’s own (as is often the case). So it became an example of a solo melody targeting the chord tones - which is what all the greats do! You can of course simply ignore the underlying chords and play a D Major scale solo and it will work (up to a point), but where you have an interesting chord progression it makes more sense to incorporate the background harmonies within your melody.
